How to jump-start your four wheeler battery

Imagine, after a late night party, you are heading home and you walk down the parking, locate your car, step in, insert the key, turn the key to on, one time, two time, three time…… and it declines to start! What could be your sinking heart feelings… Any guesses…???

Finding a four wheelers batteries store or an emergency battery service provider or a mechanic to jump start your car battery in the middle of the night or for that matter while on a long drive journey could be not only difficult but impossible too!

Long journey driving or travelling expectations go high with the kind of advertisements you see on social media, youtube, TV or photos of family friends. But the reality could be different as there may be lot of surprises when you travel and it won’t be up to our expectations. Jump-starting a car needs some expertise or at least a basic knowledge about battery functioning. A battery store mechanic or an exide battery dealer near you may help you in providing valuable tips on this. However, if you are confident enough to shoulder the task on your own, we at Exide Radial Power can provide full guidance on how to jump start your four wheeler batteries. A successful jump-start involves a few easy steps. But these steps have to be followed in the correct order so that it doesn’t damage the battery.

Here are some simple Do it Yourself” (DIY) pointers to keep in mind while jump-starting your four wheeler:

  • Some basics to know about your car batteries before trying to jump-start it for a quick revival.
    • A car battery has two nodes on top of it, known as terminals.
    • While one of them is the positive terminal, usually marked as ‘Pos.’ or ‘+’, the other one is the negative, marked as ‘Neg.’ or ‘-‘.
    • Both terminals complete the electric circuit and must be connected for the energy flow required to revive a discharged or dead battery.
    • You need jumper cables and a power source for the jump-start effect.
    • Jumper cables are thick insulated cables that have dual clips on both ends (total 4) to connect with the battery terminals.
    • The clips or the cables are usually colour-coded to indicate positive and negative polarity.
    • The power source can either be a battery in another vehicle or a jumpbox (a portable battery meant just for this purpose).
    • The main purpose of such a source is to provide the extra electric charge required by the starter motor in your car for powering it.
    • For a car in running condition, this is usually drawn from the battery; but once dead or discharged, the battery fails to provide the power required and thus necessitates the jump start service for car battery.
  •  Do’s and Don’t’s
    • All vehicles might not support jump-starting and hence you need to double-check on the car manual before you decide to revive the battery in this way. Otherwise, forceful jump-starting might damage the electrical circuit of a car.
    • Ensure that vehicle battery and battery for jump-starting have the same declared voltage (say 12V)
    • Turn off all electrical loads, check vehicles – no part should be touching each other and gear should be in neutral position.
    • Dry, frozen or corroded batteries must never be subjected to jump-starting.
    • Also, you must never connect the positive and negative terminals of the jumper cable together. One needs to be careful to keep them separate when attempting a battery revival through a jump-start.
    • Vehicles should have the same terminal earthed, if not, refer to manufacturers’ instructions.
    • Make sure that cables are not frayed or damaged.
  • Now carry out the following simple steps in sequence to jump start your car:
    • STEP1

Connect the positive terminal of the jump-starting battery to the positive terminal of the stalled car battery – on the negative grounded system.

    • STEP2

Connect one end of the other cable to the negative (-) terminal of the booster battery.

    • STEP3

Connect the other cable away from the battery to the engine block or car frame of the vehicle to be started.

    • STEP4

Make sure cables are away from fan blades and other moving vehicle parts.

    • STEP5

After starting, remove cables in reverse order, starting with one connected to the engine block or car frame.

    • STEP6

If the vehicle does not start within 30 seconds, call an auto electrician.

  • Be aware of some of the common reasons that lead to your car battery draining out. It could be because:
    • You left the headlights of your car on by mistake.
    • You left the car lights on inside your vehicle.
    • There is a problem with the ignition keys.
    • Your car battery is phased out or too old.
    • Parasitic Drain, i.e., things like your car clock, music system, security alarm etc. that keep on functioning even after you have turned the keys off.
  • Caution

Modern vehicles with electronic management systems should not be jump-started without “protected” jump starter leads. It is necessary to refer to the owner’s handbook for jump-starting procedures for such vehicles.
